Mama Liz’s Back Lounge Sunday Sessions Presents - Whale

Bob Whale = Lyrics, Music, Lead Vocals, Guitar, Bouzouki
Ian Denness = Guitar, Mandolin, Bouzouki, Harmonica, Harmonies,
Dave Henderson = Percussion

Bob Whale, Ian Denness and Dave Henderson formed WHALE in late 2016. Bob and Ian first met at a weekly acoustic session that Ian ran a few years ago and soon found they clicked with harmonies and guitar style, playing at various open mics and singarounds. Dave was between bands and their three paths crossed frequently when they would bump into him at one session or another. The three played well together and got on. It wasn’t long before they decided to start a band and agreed to call it WHALE.

Confidence grew as they played initially at open mics, pubs, a wedding! Word of mouth was finding them gigs. In their first year (2017) they played at Langdale Music Festival in the Lake District which was pretty much their first appearance as a band in front of a sizeable audience. It was a baptism of fire but they survived and were relieved and encouraged to have gone down well. The same year they were offered a slot at Live On The Green a yearly music festival in Shearsby, Leicestershire, kicking off proceedings and were invited back the following year.

Whale are an originals band although they enjoy playing the occasional cover, but as more of Bob Whales’ songs are written and crafted, the sets comprise a good 90% of self penned songs and sets that are completely original are becoming the norm. Bobs lyrics are drawn from life’s experience, relationships, good, bad, happy and sad, all serve as inspiration. Part of the fun for WHALE is creating these songs, first hearing a demo recorded by Bob or just having him play it live in basic form, then finding the melody, harmonies and rhythm, which when combined, works as a finished piece, ready to play on the live stage.

WHALE have enjoyed appearing at, among other venues, Woodfest Music Festival, Langdale Music Festival, The Rooftop Arts Centre in Corby, Hall Barn in Beaconsfield (Help For Heroes), Woodforstock Music Festival, Kontra Roots, Langton Beer Festival, Foxton Music Festival, Wurzlebush Folk Club, Nuneaton Folk Club, Althorp Coaching Inn Music Session and most recently Melton Folk Trail where the band played to a great crowd at the Boat Inn and Bob played six solo gigs over the following weekend.

Last year saw WHALE record three videos for Mark Holdworths Narrowboat Sessions and also record their first album, a six track collection of Bob Whales’ songs called Back In The Day.
