Mama Liz’s Back Lounge Sunday Sessions Presents - Hazeyjane

“Abandon me to this imagery with words that shoot the moon…”

Acclaimed composer, acoustic guitarist and singer Chris Brown created hazeyjane as the vehicle for the musical expression of his own original songs and adaptations of select pieces of poetry. Chris' voice is often said to resemble that of David Sylvian and his ambient acoustic guitar style deploys an array of unusual tunings and spider capos to create exquisite guitar figures and motifs that provide his songs with distinctively airy, graceful and spacious qualities. His debut album ONE, recorded and mastered by Ash Woodward of Tu-kay Records in Stoke Bruerne, was released in summer 2016 with reviewers writing of ‘dense multi-layered arrangements…gorgeous guitar figures’ and songs that ‘create a dreamy atmosphere’ with ‘a strong poetic bent’.

From late in 2015, the soundscape settings of hazeyjane’s songs have been enriched by the complementary legato style and signature singing sound of Kevin T Ward’s fretless bass and his use of harmonics, double stopping and chords to add rhythmic expression, texture, and colour. Since autumn 2016 celebrated master percussionist David 'Hopi' Hopkins has been part of the group adding his myriad nuanced, percussive sounds and textures to hazeyjane’s carefully crafted musical moodscapes on recordings and in live performance when possible.

A five track EP titled Kanré, the historic name of the remote place where it was recorded at David’s home in rural Brittany, was launched at Folk on the Pier in Cromer in May 2017 when hazeyjane played in trio format for the first time in the UK. On hearing it, Ric Sanders, violinist with Fairport Convention, commented ‘absolutely love it – beautiful. From the very first notes it brought to mind one of my all-time favourite albums, Hejira by Joni Mitchell, and I couldn’t pay it a better compliment than that’.

Since late 2018, both live and on recordings, celebrated singer-songwriter Corinne Lucy’s enchanting and beguiling vocal skills have provided exquisite harmonic detail to hazeyjane’s songscapes; and,in 2019, classically trained pianist/composer and teacher/therapist Anna Plaminiak, who has performed all around Europe, has brought her many talents to the band which now has now developed a more collaborative approach to songwriting, composition and arrangement.

Most rewarding to a listening and discerning audience, hazeyjane aim to produce mellow and melodic music that is, in turns, intense and intimate, dreamy and dynamic, relaxing in its mellifluence but hauntingly atmospheric; music that, ultimately, seeks the sublime. They have played concerts at the Stables in Wavendon, Zeffirellis jazz bar restaurant in Ambleside and Eyemouth Hippodrome (Scotland) and appeared at numerous arts centres, libraries, churches, restaurants, folk and other music clubs and festivals.

The band are presently engaged in finishing their second album. In addition to its quintet of members, this will include several special guest contributions and will represent and reflect entirely the current essence and ethos of the band and capture what one recent commentator described as its ‘luscious, full, hypnotic sound’. In autumn 2019, Fairport Convention’s Dave Pegg said ‘I loved hazeyjane’s E.P. Kanre and can’t wait to hear the new album… Do check this band out – it’s lovely and beautifully crafted music’.
